Quick answers for Final Fantasy III.
- How do I save Shadow on the Floating Continent?
- After Nerapa, go east to the airship ledge and choose Wait instead of Jump. If another prompt appears, keep choosing to wait. Stay at the ledge until Shadow arrives in the final seconds and the party escapes with him. Jumping early permanently removes his later recruitment; if you left without him, reload an earlier save.
- Why won’t Gau return in the World of Ruin?
- Use the Falcon to form an active party of only three, then fight on the Veldt with Moogle Charm removed. Gau can appear after a victory; stop attacking and let his return scene finish. He does not need another Dried Meat purchase. Keep fighting if he has not appeared yet.
Before you enter Phoenix Cave
Locke’s recruitment dungeon uses two teams. Prepare both before landing in the star-shaped mountain opening north of Kefka’s Tower.
- Form two teams with healing, revival, and reliable damage in each.
- Keep the same A and B labels throughout the cave; switch teams with Y.
- Leave one team on its floor switch until the other passes the opened obstruction.
- Heal after crossing spikes; many treasure chests are already empty.
- Keep a Warp Stone or learned Warp available if you need to retreat.
The route continues through the drained lava room and the paired final switches to Locke, then reminds you to rebuild the active party after Kohlingen.

What this guide covers.
From Narshe to the final tower
- Narshe, Figaro Castle, and Sabin’s first Blitz
- The three scenarios and the defense of Narshe
- Zozo, the Opera House, and the Magitek Factory
- The Sealed Gate, banquet, and Thamasa
- Floating Continent escape and the World of Ruin
- Falcon recruitment route, Phoenix Cave, and Umaro
- Three teams through Kefka’s Tower to the ending
Keep track when the party splits
Phoenix Cave uses fixed A/B team labels, and Kefka’s Tower keeps A/B/C labels through the weights and switches. Each change names the team that acts and the obstruction it opens for the others. A Find Your Place reference matches remembered events to the next section.
More quick answers.
- Why won’t Umaro join after I beat him?
- Mog must be in your active party. After defeating Umaro in the cave below Tritoch, speak to him with Mog present. If you fought without Mog, return to the Falcon, add Mog, and come back to speak to Umaro again. You do not need to repeat the battle just to supply the missing companion.
